Technological Maturity

The technological maturity level describes how mature and error-free a certain technology is in a certain application context. If new technologies with a lower level of maturity are used in the development of the AI system, they may contain risks that are still unknown or difficult to assess.Mature technologies, on the other hand, usually have a greater variety of empirical data available, which means that risks can be identified and assessed more easily. However, with mature technologies, there is a risk that risk awareness decreases over time

Mitigation strategy

1. Establish a formal Technology Maturation and Prototyping lifecycle. Conduct rigorous Technology Readiness Assessments (TRAs) and employ risk-reduction prototyping activities *a priori* to the integration of novel, low-maturity technologies to empirically assess, quantify, and mitigate unknown technical, engineering, and integration risks before deployment. 2. Institutionalize a Comprehensive AI Risk Management Framework. Adopt and implement a structured risk management framework, such as the NIST AI RMF, to ensure a uniform and continuous process for governance (Govern), contextual framing (Map), and quantitative analysis (Measure) of risks across all technological components, thereby addressing both unknown vulnerabilities in new systems and systemic oversight decay in mature systems. 3. Implement Continuous Monitoring and Periodic Control Revalidation. Deploy automated, real-time monitoring systems to track performance, data quality, and security posture, complemented by scheduled audits and re-assessments. This is critical to detect subtle model drift or degradation in control effectiveness, which counteracts the natural decline in risk awareness associated with highly mature technologies.
